The Timms Report
The Cool Clubs Putting StudioMark Timms

Mark Timms is the founder of Cool Clubs. For the last 20 years, he has been a leading entreprenuer in the club-fitting industry. His customers include dozens of tour pros along with hundreds of avid golfers of all skill levels. Here, he answers some questions about the Cool Clubs Putting Studio.

What is the Cool Clubs Putting Studio?
The Putting Studio consists of 8 laser-aligned, high-speed cameras that simultaneously video the putting stroke. We can then watch each angle, frame-by-frame, to learn a great deal about every aspect of the putter and stroke.

Why did you have the Putting Studio built at Cool Clubs?
I'd estimate that 80-90% of quality players are using a putter that is not ideally tuned for their stroke. For example, most manufacturers have a standard loft of 3-4 degrees on their putters and that's all they offer. It's like asking everyone to drive with an 8-degree driver.

Because of this, most golfers strike putts consistently off center or actually lift the ball off the ground when they putt, causing decreased accuracy. With the Putting Studio, we're able to get the exact putter length, loft, lie angle, swing weight, and grip to maximize each putter's accuracy.

For the average golfer, putts consume about 40% of their strokes each round. If we improve results by 10%, which is not a stretch, it will shave a remarkable 3 strokes off the score.

What is unique about the Putting Studio?Cool Clubs Putting Studio
Without doubt, it's the clarity and detail the player sees about his putter and stroke. Most are totally surprised--it's a real eye-opener. Plus, they see it for themselves, in slow motion on video. It's so helpful to see it so clearly to understand and make corrections. There's no other way to get this level of information.

How does the Putting Studio improve accuracy?
We video each golfer multiple times using their current putter and carefully examine the results. We see their swing path--inside-to-inside, inside-to-square, square-to-square, etc. We see how the ball reacts at impact. We see whether contact is made in the center of the club or not and what impact a mis-hit has on club path.

Based on this clear information, we can begin to make adjustments to correct issues we identify. We can alter the length of the putter. We can bend the putter to adjust the loft. Or we can suggest a different style of putter more suited to the stroke.

Once we adjust their putter or try a new one, we continue to video the stroke to check results and make further adjustments as needed until the results are optimized.

Does the player need to buy a new putter?
Actually, less than half of Putting Studio customers purchase a new putter. In most cases, we make adjustments to their current putter to improve accuracy. Our goal is to help players putt better, not sell new putters.

For those that want a new putter, we provide all the major brands like Odyssey, Rife, Titleist, Ping, Taylor Made and Callaway. But even with a new putter, we'll still adjust the length, loft or grip to maximize accuracy for each unique putting stroke.

What has been the response to the Putting Studio?
Absolutely phenomenal. The results are really showing up on our customers' scorecards. We have many customers, including pros, who come back regularly for a check up. Plus, it seems to be equally beneficial for golfers of all skill levels.

I guess it just makes sense to have complete confidence that the club you're using on 40% of your strokes is the perfect club for you!
Swing Metrics
The Angle of Descent Advantage

How To Add Some WOW To Your Tee Shots!

Obviously, your drive's Total Distance is the combined distance of Carry plus Roll.

A higher shot (e.g., 50 degree angle of descent) will carry further and roll less. A lower shot (e.g., 35 degree angle of descent) will roll further, but will carry less.

To maximize total distance, you need to generate the lowest angle of descent that minimally reduces carry distance. Testing has shown that mastering this ratio can deliver up to 17 more yards on your drives. Imagine how valuable that 17 yards would be for your game.

What factors impact the carry and angle of descent results for my drives?

There are three primary interacting factors:
  1. Launch Angle: the angle at which the ball flies from the clubface based on your attack angle and club loft
  2. Spin Rate: the amount of initial backspin generated (2,500 to 4,500 rpm) on the ball
  3. Swing Speed: the speed of the clubface at contact, in mph.
For slower swing speeds (< 90 mph), launch angle is the most critical factor for total distance. For high swing speeds (>105 mph), minimizing the spin rate is the critical factor. For the large middle group between 90 and 105 mph, you need to find the right combination for best performance.

How do I know if my driver delivers the best results for my swing?

The best way to optimize the Total Distance for your swing is to take detailed measurements for a range of drivers and shafts. Our TrackMan technology delivers 14 precise measurements on each swing. These measurements accurately define the carry and angle of descent, giving a Total Distance reading (along with accuracy readings).

We'll measure your current driver and a range of the best new drivers and shafts from leading manufacturers. With this comparative data you will know exactly which equipment delivers the best Total Distance for your swing.

Taylor Made Tour Burner Driver

If it's better than the Burner TP, Watch Out!

TM's newest driver improves what has been one of Cool Clubs' Taylor Made Tour Burner Driverhighest performing drivers, the Burner TP. This new driver comes in a full 12% lighter by taking advantage of Taylor Made's Dual Crown Technology and their Ultra-Thin Wall casting.

The club's high moment-of-inertia (MOI) should increase stability for off-center hits. A wider section of the clubface generates higher ball speeds.

The new Tour Burner is due in April and carries a SRP of $499. From what we know, if you combine this new club with the right shaft for your swing, you'll see consistently increased distance and accuracy.

If a new driver is in your future, schedule a visit to Cool Clubs to see if this new driver will help take your game to the next level.

Callaway FT Irons

Accomplished players will like the thinner topline, higher toe, and less offset, which provide a more traditional look.

Callaway has moved 80% of the clubhead's weight to the extreme perimeter for a higher MOI. For the golfer, this means Callaway FT Ironsmore forgiveness and better results on off-center hits.

Callaway has also reduced vibration in the FT irons for an enhanced feel, and the Hot Titanium face produces faster ball speeds.

Cool Clubs, with our Track-Man technology, can test the Callaway FT Irons to see if they will produce better performance than your current set.

Titleist AP2 Irons

The Cool Clubs team also wants to highlight the new Titleist AP2 irons, designed to provide the looks and shot control sought by Titleist AP2 Ironsthe skilled player.

The AP2's feature a forged 1025 carbon steel body. The tungsten nickel box is laser welded to the back and sole for a low, deep center of gravity and ideal launch parameters.

At Cool Clubs, our focus is putting the ideal equipment for your swing in your bag so you can play better golf.

Finding The Missing PieceClub Builder Grinding Club
It's a new swing thought...a slightly stronger grip...or maybe a new warm-up routine. Golfers are constantly seeking the missing piece of the puzzle that will take them to the next level.

This is where our club fitters and club builders combine with golf's best technology to define the best solution for your swing. We'll measure, study, and craft the ideal shaft to give you peak performance on every shot.

The Latest "Best New Thing" In Golf?

It looks like you'll be hearing a lot more in the coming months about interchangeable driver heads and shafts. Two major club manufacturers-Callaway and Taylor Made-have now jumped into this niche and released lines of interchangeable components.

Club technology has now made it possible to change the clubhead and/or shaft you'll play on any given day, depending on the weather, course, or maybe just how you feel you're swinging that day.

Callaway has introduced two clubheads that can be fit with dozens of leading shafts. Taylor Made is focused on a single driver with three shaft options. Both companies are confident that Tour Players will be using these clubs in the near future.

This trend is exciting for the custom-club fitting industry. It gives us the ability to quickly and easily test multiple club/shaft combinations in working to fit each player with the best driver for their swing. We will continue to monitor this new trend and will keep you informed.
Thanks for reviewing the newsletter. At Cool Clubs, our only commitment is to help you Play Better Golf. Please let us know if we can be of service in the near future.
