“In our business, we have to go the extra mile, and that doesn’t just mean we make sure our spreadsheets are up to date,” said Narramore. “That means everything we do has a purpose. We have see-through drawers in our build shop because we need to be able to see what we’re doing. Each builder has their own personal setup so they can make sure they’re not spending time looking around for things. There’s a place for everything and everything has its place. Narramore went further to expand on repeatability as it pertains to the Cool Clubs building process.
“We want to be able to create repeatability not only using our proprietary fitting and building technology but in our build process as well,” said Narramore. “We know that if we’re committed to our process back here in the build shop, and we know our fitters are committed to their process, the eventual end product is going to be as good as it can possibly be. And that’s how we help our players play better golf.”
Narramore, who has spent the better part of two decades developing Cool Clubs build shop operations protocols, and who has 12 years experience as a nuclear submarine QA inspector, explained why Cool Clubs is consistently able to produce world-class golf clubs – it’s all about having the right team.
“These guys love their jobs. They don’t just come in the morning, clock in and work until quitting time,” said Narramore. “They are committed to the process. If one part breaks down, the entire build breaks down. Which is why we don’t make mistakes.”
The Fitting/Build Process Requires Teamwork
Narramore also explained the importance of working as a team, trusting proven methods and striving for perfection.
“There’s no room for interpretation or opinion during the build process,” said Narramore. “I have a guy back here that’s 6’4” and hits it 340 yards. If he looked at a build and said ‘well, I think it would be better for me if I did this, or did that,’ then the process breaks down. It’s not enough to get a fitting profile, look at some numbers and glue a bunch of pieces of metal together. We’re constantly thinking about weight and the load and unload of the shaft and how it affects the overall performance of the club specific to the individual who was fitted for that club.”
“Although we’re master club fitters and builders, our business is not making a perfect golf club. We’re making a perfect golf club for a specific person with a specific playing style who has a specific height and a specific weight. The amount of detail that goes into every single part of the process is extensive, but it’s ultimately about creating and building a perfect club for an individual, not necessarily creating the best golf club – although that is a product of the process.”
Building Clubs So Customers Can Play Better Golf
Narramore has learned a thing or two building and managing Cool Clubs’ back end shop, especially about gimmicks and getting caught up in one element of the build.
“A lot of players get into the specific elements of the golf swing so much that they end up playing ‘golf swing’ as opposed to ‘playing golf,’” said Narramore. “We take a much more holistic approach when we build a golf club. If we’re only concerned about the weight or the shaft frequency or the grip, then we’re doing a disservice to our customer. We have to be concerned with how all of the elements of a golf club affect the overall playability and repeatability of the golf club when it’s in use by the player.”
Narramore had one final thought about his tenure at Cool Clubs.
