With all the different choices and brands of golf balls, and with an array of colors and features available, finding the right golf ball for your game can be like finding a needle in, well, a really large stack of needles. But if you’re looking for a great feeling and solid performing golf ball and you have a slower swing speed than the players you see bomb it down the fairway on the PGA TOUR, then the Callaway Supersoft Max might just be the one for you. One of its defining features: the ball is actually larger than a standard golf ball. We know what you’re thinking. And yes, it’s legal.
Per the rules of golf, a ball cannot be smaller than 1.68 inches. But it can be bigger as long as the ball does not exceed 1.62 ounces. Callaway accomplished this with their Supersoft Max. If you hold one of the golf balls in your hand and look at it closely, you can’t tell it’s larger (roughly .05 inches larger than most golf balls). But when held next to a conventional ball you will visibly notice the difference. Why the larger ball? It’s easier for players with moderate swing speeds to launch the ball into the air – especially on long iron shots. Simple.
Here’s what one of Cool Clubs’ Master Fitters had to say about the ball:
“I decided to play a few rounds with the Supersoft Max and see how it performs and it feels great,” said Sue O’Connor, Cool Clubs Master Fitter. “True to the name it feels soft yet still flies off the face nicely. It launches high and spins well too. Even on shots where I did not feel I made great impact the ball still launched high and stayed up in the air which is likely due to the oversize design. How nice to have a ball that performs well on mishits! The “launch window” was impressively consistent throughout the round, too.”
“Around the greens the Supersoft Max had a great feel off the wedge face,” O’Connor added. “A nice bonus is the larger ‘sight line’ printed on the ball to line up your putts. For those of us with slower swing speeds who do not compress the ball as well as TOUR players, this lower compression ball is a good gamer. The Callaway Supersoft Max is definitely worth a try.”
