What is the S3 All About?
Our fitting matrix is extensive and our experience is unmatched, but what truly sets Cool Clubs apart is driven by our proprietary fitting software and our Shaft Simulation System (S3). The S3 Machine gives us more information than we’ve ever had available covering thousands of individual shaft specifications. The more information we have stored in our in-house database, the better we’re able to customize the perfect shaft for your club fitting experience. High spin or low spin? Different frequencies and flex? Kick points? Each of these questions and more are stored in the database, and it allows our club fitters to easily specify the exact shaft to fit your game.
This system is essentially five machines in one and is fully automated to gather all of the necessary information about each shaft in our inventory. The start-to-finish process for each shaft measured is completed within two and a half minutes. With the S3, we are able to detect and then collect the most accurate and precise shaft data available in the industry.
The Five Characteristics That the S3 Measures
Based on our long history of matching up the correct shaft with clubheads of all types, we’ve developed a unique understanding of the performance characteristics necessary to provide a predictable set of expectations when we fit our customers at Cool Clubs. Each shaft produced, even those from the very best manufacturers, can have small inconsistencies, or deviations, from the “norm” anticipated by the manufacturing gurus who run those factory product lines. Our S3 machine allows us to isolate those issues before we match up a shaft with a clubhead.

How the S3 Improves Your Fitting Experience
The S3 process begins with a high resolution optic system that is able to take images of the shaft and rotate the shaft in 15 degree increments to make sure we have a complete profile of the shaft’s straightness. When that is finished, we get prompted to add a tip mass onto the end of the shaft, which simulates a driver head (or other club head weights) and we bend it in order to get a full deflection profile. During this process we are collecting about 2,500 data points that we use for comparisons.
Finally, measuring the frequency helps us define the quality of the shaft and determine the torque. That will let us know how “stiff” the shaft is. “R,” “S” and “XS” are not as meaningful as you might imagine because there is no standard among manufacturers to define a precise measurement of “stiffness.” That’s why we rely on shaft frequency as our standard definition.
So, testing all of inventoried shaft products in-house using the S3 solves that problem for us, and eventually for you.
